                                                                         internet

It is essential that both parents and children are aware of the dangers posed by using the internet. If used sensibly, the internet is a fantastic resource of information and fun. However, there are certain rules that should be followed to help protect your children when they are using the internet.

Always follow these GOLDen Rules:

Ground rules

  • Together discuss 'How should the internet be used in our home?'
  • Keep information private - think, would I tell this to a stranger?
  • Agree rules about meeting online 'friends' in real life.
  • Generally- if not acceptable in real life it shouldn't be acceptable on line.

Online Safety

  • Anti-virus and parental monitoring systems
  • Online safety guides
  • Activate privacy and security settings.

Location

  • Internet access should be in a family room, rather than a bedroom
  • Be aware that online gaming consoles e.g. Nintendo DS, X-Box or mobile phones can access the internet.
  • Internet access can be gained via a neighbours wireless network.

Dialogue

  • Share the experience
  • Get them to teach you- this is better than any course you can go on.
  • Ensure they are happy to talk to you if they have a problem or feel uncomfortable.

Please also look carefully at the links below. They contain vital information and support that can help you protect your child whilst using the internet. Also, do not hesitate to talk to a member of staff in the school who will be more then happy to offer support with this issue if you need it.
