Many children, at some time in their school career, will have special educational needs of some kind. Most children’s needs will be met by their ordinary (mainstream) school, sometimes with the help of outside specialists.
What can I do if I think my child has a learning difficulty at school? Make an appointment to talk to your child’s teacher or our SENDCo Lead Mrs Megan Matthews. Many problems can be sorted out easily, especially if they are dealt with quickly. In some cases, the school – with permission of the child’s parents – may call in outside specialists to help ensure that the child’s needs are fully understood so that appropriate help may be given.

SEND Vision Statement
The special educational needs and disabilities policy is based on our school ethos statement and vision. Each child is encouraged to develop to his/her full potential in all areas, that his/her talents in any area are recognised and used while weaknesses are supported and individual needs met as far as possible either through differentiation and/or in house support or by accessing the other services available. The policy also recognises the rights of all to a broad balanced curriculum including all subjects of the National Curriculum. To translate these rights and entitlements of access into practice the school needs a good consistent educational approach across the board and then a structured procedure of systems of: identification, assessment and support for children experiencing difficulties of any kind. At all times the view of the parents/guardians are considered a vital part of the child’s education but particularly so with a child with additional or more specialised needs. The child will be encouraged to take part in their own learning process and even the youngest of children will be given the chance to discuss their views.
As a school which aims to be fully inclusive this document is intended to assist in the removal of barriers to learning, to enable all children to reach their full potential and have equal access to the whole curriculum. NB where this policy refers to parent the same procedure will apply to legal guardians. We fully endorse the Disability Discrimination Act of 2002 and 2005 and at Linden Primary School no one will be discriminated against on grounds of disability.
We aspire to be sensitive to the needs of every child, reducing barriers to learning and making the curriculum accessible to every student. Reasonable adjustments to physical and other arrangements of the school are considered where necessary, taking into account the nature of any impairment, pupil and parent views and advice from teachers and other professionals. Prospective parents are asked to inform the school of any disabilities or additional needs their children may have when registering. Continuing communication between parents and staff is vital to ensure that reasonable adjustments can be considered where necessary, whether impairments were apparent when the student entered the school or developed at a later stage.
School Local Offer
All Gloucestershire schools have a similar approach to meeting the needs of pupils with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities and are supported by the Local Authority to ensure that all pupils, regardless of their specific needs, make the best possible progress in school. All schools are supported to be as inclusive as possible, with the needs of pupils with a Special Educational Need/s and or disabilities being met in a mainstream setting wherever possible and where families want this to happen.
Schools are required to publish information about services they provide for children with disabilities and Special Educational Needs and Disabilities. This is called the ‘Local Offer’. The intention is to offer choice and transparency for families, as wells as providing a resource for professionals to detail the range of services and provision locally.
